Centennial Park is a bit of “wilderness in the city”. It is a very large wooded park with over a mile of frontage on the Kenai River, and is separated from the adjacent Regional Sports Complex by a steep wooded slope. The campground was first built in the early 1980s, and was expanded to include a boat launch and additional campsites throughout the next decades. New restrooms and fish cleaning stations were provided in 2011. Fish stairs and boardwalks were re-designed and installed in 2013, which greatly improved the natural habitat for plants, fish, and other animals along the river.
