DESCRIPTION:The Equinox Marathon is the premier running event in Interior Alaska. With most of the course on trails and a challenging climb up and over Ester Dome—and up and over it again!—it is a challenging marathon that will test your running abilities. But don’t worry if it seems too overwhelming! Our generous 10 hour time cutoff is great for walkers who can keep a steady pace\, and you can do roughly a half of the course by doing the half marathon. \nAs the name suggests\, the race takes place near the Equinox\, in this case the autumnal equinox in the latter part of September. This is the time when we near the end of our beautiful\, green Fairbanks summers\, as the leaves turn yellow and orange and trees begin to lose their leaves. But is (usually) before winter’s snows begin to fall. The entire community comes out to run\, volunteer\, and spectate in this big end of summer party.

DESCRIPTION:Are you ready for an adventure in the remote beauty of interior Alaska? Come north to Fairbanks\, Alaska for the annual White Mountains 100-mile ultra race. A 100-mile human powered race across interior Alaska. The race course cuts through the heart of the jagged limestone peaks that define the White Mountains National Recreation Area. This rugged wilderness will challenge racers with a variety of terrain and trail conditions\, satisfying even the most experienced winter athlete. Steep climbs\, bowel-clenching descents\, sharp turns\, areas of active overflow\, glare ice\, tree stumps\, roots\, and bare tussocks are all part of the White Mountains trail network. Sub-zero temperatures\, strong winds\, along with blowing and drifting snow may add to the excitement. DESCRIPTION:You can’t compare it to any other competitive event in the world! A race covering  1000 miles of the roughest\, most beautiful terrain Mother Nature has to offer. She throws jagged mountain ranges\, frozen river\, dense forest\, desolate tundra and miles of windswept coast at the mushers and their dog teams. Add to that temperatures far below zero\, winds that can cause a complete loss of visibility\, the hazards of overflow\, long hours of darkness and treacherous climbs and side hills\, and you have the Iditarod. A race extraordinaire\, a race only possible in Alaska. \nFrom Anchorage\, in south central Alaska\, to Nome on the western Bering Sea coast. \nIt has been called the “Last Great Race on Earth®” and it has won worldwide acclaim and interest.  American film crews as well as film crews from around the world have covered the event. Journalists from outdoor magazines\, adventure magazines\, newspapers and wire services flock to Anchorage and Nome to record the excitement. It’s not just a sled dog race\, it’s a race in which unique men and woman compete. Mushers enter from all walks of life. Fishermen\, lawyers\, doctors\, miners\, artists\, natives\, Canadians\, Swiss\, French and others.  Men and women each with their own story\, each with their own reasons for going the distance. Hundreds  of volunteers\, men and women\, students and village residents all help to organize and stage the event. They man headquarters at Wasilla\, Anchorage\, and Nome.  They fly volunteers\, veterinarians\, dog food and supplies. They act as checkers\, coordinators\, and family supporters of each musher. \n

SUMMARY:Anchorage International Film festival
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 2001\, the Anchorage International Film Festival will be hosting its 16th annual celebration of independent film in Anchorage this December. Attended by filmmakers and cinema-lovers from all over the US and the world\, the festival seeks to support new media and independent filmmaking in Alaska and beyond. Festival-goers are treated to the opportunity to watch films not-yet-released or that won’t be released in Alaskan theaters\, plus engaging Q & A sessions after the films with attending filmmakers\, plus numerous other events. In 2015\, AIFF screened over 100 films in 10 days\, with a wide international selection of Features\, Documentaries\, Shorts\, Animation\, and the Made In Alaska category. The Bear Tooth Theatrepub\, Anchorage Museum\, Alaska Experience Theater and the 49th State Brewing Company are among the hosting venues of this international film festival.

Thursday hikes are moderate difficulty. No advance registration required\, just meet at the trailhead. Hike starts at 6:35 p.m. sharp! \n$1 donation for non-members. Membership $20.

DESCRIPTION:A String Group Just For Fun \nNorth Star Strings welcomes adult violinists\, violists\, cellists and bass players who enjoy playing Broadway show tunes\, light classics\, pops\, Celtic and fiddle music. Meetings are Saturdays from 10:00 am to noon in Music Room 301 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. There are no auditions and new players are welcome at any time. Players of all abilities are encouraged to come. Music is provided and there is no fee. It’s a fun\, friendly group that has a good time together. \nLast season North Star Strings played at the Downtown Association’s Summer and Winter Solstice Festivals\, the Fairbanks Winter Folk Fest\, weddings\, and social and community events. The group plays without a conductor\, so members are involved in the planning and preparation for performances. \nRecurring weekly on Saturday 10 am until 12 noon.   September 1st until December 29th
