SUMMARY:SITKA WHALEFEST
DESCRIPTION:Sitka WhaleFest is a festival to celebrate marine life through science education\, community and storytelling! Sitka WhaleFest raises awareness\, educates\, and creates enthusiasm for the marine environment. Our goal is to bring a deeper understanding of the marine environment to a diverse and inclusive audience in a way that all participants feel welcome and engaged. \nThrough a community-based festival we celebrate the marine world and our connection to it. We seek to convey that science is not just for scientists; it is a part of our everyday lives. The core of the festival\, is a unique science symposium for all that blends local knowledge and scientific inquiry of the rich marine environment of our oceans. Surrounded by community and cultural activities\, the weekend events include science presentations\, marine wildlife cruises in beautiful Sitka Sound\, a marine-themed artisan market\, music\, local foods\, art show\, interactive student sessions\, and a fun run/walk. Come to Sitka WhaleFest and celebrate with this unique tradition with our community! \n \nAt Sitka WhaleFest in November\, world-renowned scientists share their expertise on whales and marine life through three days of lectures in Sitka. Whale watching cruises take presenters and guests out to search for whales and other marine wildlife in Sitka Sound. This community event aims to raise awareness and appreciation for marine life through education and storytelling\, and includes other activities such as live music\, an art show\, food and art vendors\, and a fun run.

SUMMARY:Equinox Marathon
DESCRIPTION:The Equinox Marathon is the premier running event in Interior Alaska. With most of the course on trails and a challenging climb up and over Ester Dome—and up and over it again!—it is a challenging marathon that will test your running abilities. But don’t worry if it seems too overwhelming! Our generous 10 hour time cutoff is great for walkers who can keep a steady pace\, and you can do roughly a half of the course by doing the half marathon. \nAs the name suggests\, the race takes place near the Equinox\, in this case the autumnal equinox in the latter part of September. This is the time when we near the end of our beautiful\, green Fairbanks summers\, as the leaves turn yellow and orange and trees begin to lose their leaves. But is (usually) before winter’s snows begin to fall. The entire community comes out to run\, volunteer\, and spectate in this big end of summer party.

SUMMARY:Anchorage RunFest
DESCRIPTION:Anchorage RunFest is a collection of running events that celebrate runners of all abilities from the elite runners to the back of the packers. This late season Boston Marathon qualifier boasts ideal running weather\, mild temperatures and a fast course with very little elevation gain. The out and back route takes runners through downtown Anchorage before heading out along the scenic coastline and through the city’s wooded greenbelt. In keeping with the event’s ‘wild’ reputation\, Anchorage’s thriving urban wildlife is often spotted along the race-course. \nThe popular two-day event\, has grown from a small community race to a true destination event with runners and walkers coming from all over the globe. \nA 2-day health and fitness expo and bib pickup will be held at the Dena’ina Convention Center. \nAnchorage RunFest is the largest event and main fundraiser for the Anchorage Running Club\, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization. Funds raised through this event are used in part to provide college scholarships to deserving high school runners\, to high school sports teams and to other athletic events in the community that support its mission to promote a healthy lifestyle through running and exercise. \nAnchorage RunFest is put on by a dedicated all-volunteer race committee. \nRegistration and more information can be found at the website link above.

SUMMARY:MAYOR'S MARATHON IN ANCHORAGE
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re running or cheering on the participants\, marathons are always fun\, and this summertime race through Anchorage is the biggest marathon in Alaska. The event\, which happens during the Summer Solstice in June\, has been a tradition for the past 40 years and is something everyone looks forward to. \nIt’s usually ideal marathon weather\, between 55 and 70 degrees\, which is perfect for the 4\,000 runners who fly in from all 50 states and some 15 countries. Racers will see the Coastal Trail\, run a little through downtown\, and end at the iconic and centrally located Delaney Park Strip\, where there’s a very festive atmosphere. Some marathoners are elite runners\, as this is a U.S. Track & Field approved race (and there are cash prizes for any broken records)\, while others get dressed up in crazy costumes. On race day\, there’s also there’s a marathon relay\, a half marathon\, a 4-mile race\, and a 2-mile youth race. \nThe race attracts thousands of energized spectators as well\, and the Solstice is a great time to visit Alaska—there are more than 19 hours of daylight\, and a lot of other events are happening at the same time\, like the Downtown Summer Solstice Festival and the Spenard Jazz Fest (which lasts for 3 weeks). \nCourse Routes\n\nMarathon: 26.2 miles\, begins at Bartlett High School\, ends at Delaney Park Strip.\nMarathon Relay: 26.2 miles with 4 relay members. Same course as the marathon. Relay exchanges are at miles 7.1\, 15\, and 21.\nHalf-Marathon: 13.1 miles\, begins and ends at Delaney Park Strip\, via the Coastal Trail and Westchester Lagoon. Route follows a wooded path for half a mile from a road back to the Coastal Trail.\n4 miler: 4 miles\, along the Coastal Trail and to Westchester Lagoon.\nYouth Cup: 1.6 miles\, follows same course as the 4 miler\, but turns around at Westchester Lagoon.
