SUMMARY:MAYOR'S MARATHON IN ANCHORAGE
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re running or cheering on the participants\, marathons are always fun\, and this summertime race through Anchorage is the biggest marathon in Alaska. The event\, which happens during the Summer Solstice in June\, has been a tradition for the past 40 years and is something everyone looks forward to. \nIt’s usually ideal marathon weather\, between 55 and 70 degrees\, which is perfect for the 4\,000 runners who fly in from all 50 states and some 15 countries. Racers will see the Coastal Trail\, run a little through downtown\, and end at the iconic and centrally located Delaney Park Strip\, where there’s a very festive atmosphere. Some marathoners are elite runners\, as this is a U.S. Track & Field approved race (and there are cash prizes for any broken records)\, while others get dressed up in crazy costumes. On race day\, there’s also there’s a marathon relay\, a half marathon\, a 4-mile race\, and a 2-mile youth race. \nThe race attracts thousands of energized spectators as well\, and the Solstice is a great time to visit Alaska—there are more than 19 hours of daylight\, and a lot of other events are happening at the same time\, like the Downtown Summer Solstice Festival and the Spenard Jazz Fest (which lasts for 3 weeks). \nCourse Routes\n\nMarathon: 26.2 miles\, begins at Bartlett High School\, ends at Delaney Park Strip.\nMarathon Relay: 26.2 miles with 4 relay members. Same course as the marathon. Relay exchanges are at miles 7.1\, 15\, and 21.\nHalf-Marathon: 13.1 miles\, begins and ends at Delaney Park Strip\, via the Coastal Trail and Westchester Lagoon. Route follows a wooded path for half a mile from a road back to the Coastal Trail.\n4 miler: 4 miles\, along the Coastal Trail and to Westchester Lagoon.\nYouth Cup: 1.6 miles\, follows same course as the 4 miler\, but turns around at Westchester Lagoon.

SUMMARY:Iditarod
DESCRIPTION:You can’t compare it to any other competitive event in the world! A race covering  1000 miles of the roughest\, most beautiful terrain Mother Nature has to offer. She throws jagged mountain ranges\, frozen river\, dense forest\, desolate tundra and miles of windswept coast at the mushers and their dog teams. Add to that temperatures far below zero\, winds that can cause a complete loss of visibility\, the hazards of overflow\, long hours of darkness and treacherous climbs and side hills\, and you have the Iditarod. A race extraordinaire\, a race only possible in Alaska. \nFrom Anchorage\, in south central Alaska\, to Nome on the western Bering Sea coast. \nIt has been called the “Last Great Race on Earth®” and it has won worldwide acclaim and interest.  American film crews as well as film crews from around the world have covered the event. Journalists from outdoor magazines\, adventure magazines\, newspapers and wire services flock to Anchorage and Nome to record the excitement. It’s not just a sled dog race\, it’s a race in which unique men and woman compete. Mushers enter from all walks of life. Fishermen\, lawyers\, doctors\, miners\, artists\, natives\, Canadians\, Swiss\, French and others.  Men and women each with their own story\, each with their own reasons for going the distance. Hundreds  of volunteers\, men and women\, students and village residents all help to organize and stage the event. They man headquarters at Wasilla\, Anchorage\, and Nome.  They fly volunteers\, veterinarians\, dog food and supplies. They act as checkers\, coordinators\, and family supporters of each musher. \n

SUMMARY:Susitna 100 and Little Su 50K
DESCRIPTION:The Susitna 100 is a ski\, foot\, or bike race held on packed snowmachine and dog sled trails in the Susitna River valley\, north of Anchorage. The remoteness of the trail\, distance between checkpoints\, and the winter conditions during the Race make it necessary for the racers to carry with them survival equipment. Gear to be used must pass inspection. \nRun in conjunction with it’s older brother\, the Susitna 100\, the Little Su 50k shares some of the same course as the 100 miler. This race offers a distance that will appeal to the sprinters as well as those looking for a day adventure. It will also appeal to those who are here to watch and/or support someone doing the longer 100 mile race.

SUMMARY:HOMER GARDENER'S WEEKEND
DESCRIPTION:The first Sunday of August brings a special event to Homer: the opportunity to step into private gardens that showcase the uniqueness of Alaskan gardening and get some real insight into what it’s like to work the land in a place where the growing season is short and the days long. Some 400 people come to Homer from all over\, some of them gardeners from other parts of Alaska\, and others from outside the state who simply have an interest in gardens. \nThe event begins the day before\, on Saturday\, when a notable guest speaker lectures at the Island and Oceans Visitor Center. Authors\, garden designers\, and photographers have all spoken at this free event. On Sunday\, you can tour five or six of Homer’s best gardens\, all carefully chosen to represent the broad spectrum of growing in the Homer area. Organizers try to have perennial\, annual\, and vegetable gardens represented\, as well as gardens with special features. The weekend concludes with a reception\, held on the grounds of Bear Creek Winery from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
