SUMMARY:ALASKA AIRLINES SLUSH CUP
DESCRIPTION:Imagine skiers dressed up in crazy costumes\, bombing down a hill\, trying to build up enough speed to skim all the way across an icy pond. That’s what the Slush Cup—held every April at Alyeska Resort—is all about. The fact that very few people make it across just adds to the fun. \nThe Slush Cup has been an Alyeska tradition for 38 years and is part of Spring Carnival\, which is held over the third weekend of April. The pond skimming happens at 4 p.m. on that Saturday\, and it’s the year’s biggest event—skiers clamor to be one of the 50 people chosen to participate\, and thousands of people turn out to watch it. And while it gets quite rowdy\, families and kids will enjoy the spectacle. The costumes can be outrageous—everything from the Incredible Hulk to Sarah Palin. In fact\, they have to be outrageous—half of the participants are chosen during a costume contest the night before. \nIt’s a fun event to plan a trip around: Spring is a great time to go skiing\, and Alyeska is Alaska’s premier ski resort. So enjoy the snow and the mountain during the day\, then make your way to the Slush Cup by 4 p.m. (Come a little early for the “Idiot Swim\,” where people swim across the same icy pond.) There’s no seating\, so come prepared to stand\, but you may want to walk around anyway and check out the food vendors\, face painting for kids\, and some arts and crafts for sale. \nEither way\, the Slush Cup is decidedly an event you don’t want to miss! \nPARKING –  Due to tons of snow this year and high snowbanks\, parking at the the resort and in Girdwood will be very limited. Car pool as much as possible and be aware that parking at the resort may not be possible. \nFriday\, April 22 | Sitzmark Deck \n7 – 8 pm\nCostume Contest – ALL 50 entries are up for grabs for the most creative costumes and best dancers! Dress to impress the judges and you may just find yourself straight-lining into a slushy pond at Saturday’s main event.\nThere will be NO costume entries day-of. Must be 18 or older. \n8 – 11 pm\nBraided River Band \nSaturday\, April 23 | Christmas Run Venue \n3 pm\nIdiot Swim – Grab your buds and go for a swim in the Slush Cup pool\n3:45 pm\nNational Anthem\n4 – 6 pm\nAlaska Airlines Slush Cup \n7 – 10 pm\nPast Our Prime – Live at the Sitz \nSunday\, April 24 | Presented by Kendall Toyota of Anchorage \n9 – 11 am\nDownhill Mountain Bike Race – This Le Mans-style start crowns the fastest downhill bikers in Alaska\, from the top of the tram to the Daylodge base area.\nDisc breaks and full-face helmets required\, studded tires recommended  \n11:30 am – 1 pm\nDummy Downhill – Home-made Dummy’s  go FULL SEND off a jump. Scores are based on dummy creativity\, air\, and destruction upon crashing. \n2:30 – 4:30 pm\nTug-o-War – a good ol’ fashion tug of war to pull the opposing team into the pool. This bracket tournament is a test of strength\, endurance and strategy.

SUMMARY:4TH OF JULY IN TENAKEE SPRINGS
DESCRIPTION:enakee doesn’t take Independence Day too seriously\, and that’s a plus. Its celebration is a slapdash affair\, long on homemade humor and short on pomp. Jump into its games and contests and you’ll earn the affection of locals. \nYou can meet almost everyone in town\, plus some visitors and commercial fisherman by showing up in Tenakee on the Fourth of July. \nIt’s an all-day celebration of tasty food and quirky games\, featuring kids\, dogs\, floats\, flags…and slugs. It begins with a parade of people walking and riding bikes and four-wheelers along Tenakee Avenue\, beginning at the fire hall. \nParade entrants include kids riding their bikes\, a variety of “floats” made from John Deere utility vehicles\, the town fire truck\, and usually at least one marching band. (In Tenakee\, that means three friends broke out the old flute\, banjo and accordion\, playing loudly while walking down the gravel parade route.) \nAn afternoon potluck picnic is typically a seafood feast\, with commercial fisherman supplying crabs\, halibut and barbecued salmon and more. It’s a treat for visitors. The locals – who eat seafood all year long – will typically be the folks eating burgers! \nThe quirky charm of Tenakee continues\, as kids and adults compete for prizes in events ranging from foot races to a lemon pass. A “sweet tooth” contest attracts delicious home-made baked goods and if that’s not enough sugar\, a piñata full of candy is beaten aggressively by the younger set too. \nMeanwhile\, “big kids” pay for the privilege of participating in a “slug slinging” contest – a fundraiser that helps with upkeep of the community bathhouse. Each slug costs $1 and is thrown as far as the contestant can sling it. Southeastern Alaska slugs are big – and slimy – so anyone trying this is encouraged to use that community bath once the fun crawls to an end! Fireworks get blasted off the deck of a barge anchored offshore. \nIf you plan your trip starting on the Fourth of July\, you’ll know a lot of people’s names around town for the rest of your stay.

SUMMARY:NOME SUMMER SOFTBALL
DESCRIPTION:Nome’s softball fields can get muddy\, but that doesn’t slow anybody down. Softball is a passion here\, with this small community fielding up to five teams for women and six for men. This type of game has long been part of Nome’s tradition. In its earliest days\, mining and dredging companies sponsored teams and a baseball field was built. The tundra was scraped away and then covered with burlap bags. Dirt and grass seed followed\, along with bleachers and electric lights. Some teams even went on national tour\, representing the far north quite ably. \nToday’s softball teams are frequently made up of community members who have some competitive college sports in their backgrounds\, and the adult leagues give them a chance to stay in shape and indulge in some friendly but spirited competition. With summer days getting longer and longer as the weeks go by\, the games can also go on well past midnight\, too. \nTo catch a game\, call the Nome Visitors Center to find out the schedule. The softball fields are located east of Nome Recreation Center between 6th Avenue and Nome Bypass Road.

SUMMARY:NOME-GOLOVIN SNOWMACHINE RACE
DESCRIPTION:Snowmachines became very popular in rural Alaska in the 1960s\, for both practical\, recreational and sporting purposes. The Nome-Golovin Race\, first run in 1967\, is held on the second Saturday in March. Racers begin and end in Nome after following 100 miles of the Iditarod trail down the coast to Golovin and back. Three race classes\, for men\, women and juniors\, allow all to join in the fun of this sprint event. It’s exciting for both riders and spectators\, with top finishers coming in just over two hours. This means you can catch both the start and finish – and maybe even the Award Ceremonies\, held a few days later.

SUMMARY:Great Alaska Craft Beer & Home Brew Festival
DESCRIPTION:The annual Great Alaska Craftbeer and Home Brew Festival\, held each Memorial Day weekend\, is a rite of spring in Haines. The “Haines Beerfest\,” as its known by locals\, is very popular\, and tickets sell out weeks in advance. It kicks off with a gourmet dinner\, where each course includes beer as an ingredient. The following day\, the crowd descends on the Southeast Alaska State Fairgrounds\, where craft beer and homebrew samples abound. The town doesn’t have enough hotel rooms to house all the visitors\, so people camp. The Fort Seward Parade Grounds\, the beach in front of the cruise ship dock\, and Tlingit Park are packed with tents.
