INTERIOR ALASKA
The 1,365-mile Alaska Highway ends
at Delta Junction, 200 miles past
the Alaska border (Historic Milepost
1422). The town came into being as
a construction camp for the building
of the Alaska Highway in 1942 and
the Fort Greely army post in the early
50s. It’s also home to the Pogo Gold
Mine which celebrated fourteen years
of gold production. The deposit has
yielded more than 4 million ounces
of gold since 2006 employing 340
full-time, year-round employees and
200 contract employees. It operated
24 hours a day, 365 days per year.
The City of Delta Junction is located
in the fertile Tanana River Valley and
surrounded by the White Mountains
to the north, the Granite Mountains
to the southeast, and the Alaska
Range to the southwest the Delta
River to the west.
Be sure to visit the
Delta Junction Visitor
Center which sits at
the intersection and
welcomes visitors
with a friendly cup of
coffee and a certificate
proclaiming they have
completed North
America’s ultimate road
trip. Delta Junction
got its name from the
river along which it is
situated and from the
junction of the Alaska
Highway and the
Richardson Highway.
Delta Junction is home to the
90,000-acre Delta Bison Sanctuary,
which was created to contain a
free-roaming herd of more than
500 animals. The area features
spectacular views of the Alaska
Range and the Delta River. On clear
days the panoramas of Mount Hayes,
Mount Moffit and other peaks are
stunning.
Delta is an agricultural community,
and visitors can taste the local
produce at Highway’s End Farmer’s
Market across from the visitor’s
center at the Triangle or during the
Deltana Fair. The Deltana Fair & Music
Festival runs from July 19-21, 2024
and features the Pipeline Run in the
Late Night Sun, blueberry pie contest,
Delta’s got Talent and much more!
Every year the Deltana Parade kicks
off the start of the Fair weekend.
For a historical view of farming,
the Alaska Homestead & Historical
Museum, east of Delta Junction
on the Alaska Highway, is the site
of an early homestead farm and a
large collection of early farming
equipment.

Also known as the Alyeska Pipeline,
it was built in a mere three years
between 1974 and 1977, trans-
Alaska pipeline has many impressive
milestones to its name. It was
designed and constructed to move
oil from the North Slope of Alaska
to the northern most ice-free port
in Valdez, Alaska. Through its 48-
inch diameter pipes, it has carried
almost 17 billion barrels of oil over
the past 40 years. It stretches almost
800 miles, running oil from Prudhoe
Bay in the northern part of the state
to Valdez, crossing three mountain
ranges and 800 riverbeds.
This expansive length of metal also
provides tourists with an unintended
abundance of photo opportunities all
along the pipeline’s span.
