Make the 60 mile drive on
gorgeous Chena Hot Springs
road from Fairbanks. The road
is paved and generally well
maintained.
Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted
by the natural beauty of the
Chena River Valley and the
warm, soothing waters of the
hot springs. Immerse yourself
in the hot mineral pools,
ranging in temperature from
100 to 106 degrees Fahrenheit,
and let the stress of everyday
life melt away. For a truly
unique experience, take a dip in
the Aurora Ice Museum, where
everything from the walls to
the furniture is made of ice.
Be sure to stop in at the
Missing Moose Cafe along the
way!

Easy Trails in Fairbanks
Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl
Refuge offers easy, flat loops (1–3
miles) such as the Boreal Forest
Trail, Seasonal Wetland Trail, and
Chickadee Loop. Wander through
wetlands and boreal forest while
spotting birds, moose, and other
wildlife. The refuge sits on College
Road with plenty of parking, and
Tanana Valley Campground is literally
next door—many sites have direct
trail access.
Just a short hop away, the
Wander Lake Trail at Fountainhead
Wedgewood Bird Sanctuary provides
a gentle 1.4-mile loop around a
scenic lake on mostly flat gravel
paths—ideal for a relaxed morning
stroll.
The Chena River Nature Trail and
Riverwalk give you peaceful paved
and gravel paths right along the
water. Several popular RV parks—
including River’s Edge Resort, Chena
River State Recreation Site, and the
Fairbanks/Chena River KOA—sit
directly on the river with trailheads at
your doorstep.
For a bit more adventure, drive the
paved Chena Hot Springs Road
(about 45 minutes from town) to
the Angel Rocks Trail. This popular
3- to 3.5-mile loop climbs to
dramatic granite formations with
sweeping valley views. The large
trailhead parking lot handles big rigs
comfortably, and you’ll pass excellent
RV camping spots in Chena River
State Recreation Area on the way.
