Most anglers dream of fishing
in Alaska. Be sure you know the
regulations for the area where
you plan to fish. Know the
rules for the waterway too.
Be sure to have your Alaska fishing
license with you whenever you are
fishing. Anyone age 16 or older must
have a sport fishing license. A king
salmon stamp is required in addition
to your license if you plan to catch
one of these remarkable fish.
Sport Fishing Licenses and King
Salmon Stamps can be purchased
online, at most sporting goods
stores in Alaska or at Alaska
Fish and Game offices.
Most visitors to Alaska are keen
to fish for Salmon around the
Anchorage and Valdez areas or on
the Kenai Peninsula. Depending
where you fish, the run timing can
vary by a week or two. Generally,
the run timing for Salmon is:
•
Chinook (King) Salmon
mid-May to mid-July
Fishing in Alaska
•
Sockeye (Red) Salmon
early-July to late-August
•
Coho (Silver) Salmon
mid-July to late-September
•
Pink Salmon – mid-
July to late-August
•
Chum (Dog) Salmon mid-
June to early-July
Wherever you fish, we ask you to treat
the fish gently, with respect, learn
the proper handling techniques and
practice live release in moderation.
Can I hunt?
In Alaska, a license is required to
hunt or trap. There are a variety of
licenses available to non-resident
hunters. To hunt different species,
you may also need a harvest tag, a
special stamp or a permit in addition
to your hunting and fishing license.
A Big Game Tag is required if
you plan to hunt brown/grizzly
bear, black bear, bison, caribou,
deer, elk, goat, moose, bull musk
ox, sheep, wolf or wolverine.
