Road Trip to Circle

At one time the “biggest log cabin city in the world”

This 162-mile trip starts with the 11-mile-long Steese Expressway from Fairbanks to Fox. From Fox it is another 118 miles to Central or 152 miles to Circle at the Yukon River. Eagle Summit (3,685 feet), at mile 107, is the third highest highway summit in Alaska. The highway is gravel from mile 81 to its end at Circle. Be sure to check road conditions before continuing past Central to Circle.

In 1896, Circle, also called Circle City, was the largest mining town on the Yukon River with a population of 1,200. Today, Circle has a population of 80 and travelers can still visit the old log cabins from the gold rush.
